Why This … Nepali ?

Those viral videos of cooling down in Nepal and all of a sudden come a Nepali Kolaveri. Howz that ?

So, WHAT is this Kolaveri? Kolaveri is unexpected not just to those involved in making of this song or the movie team it belongs, it surprised Bollywood the most. No Bollywood song has been so popular like Kolaveri, which is from a Tamil movie. And the most surprising part is, it went viral even before it’s audio release and only with their making of the song video. On the other hand, Kolaveri has made people round the world know more about Tamil movies which also discloses that most Bollywood blockbusters are Tamil remakes.

So, Why this Nepali Kolaveri? For most of us, point is we are loving it and sharing it in our social networks. Yet, why not think WHY because we all know Bollywood does nothing without benefits. Making a Nepali version seems Nepalese being respected to some extend, or could be a publicity stunt targeting Nepalese. Does that mean something is coming? Something Bollywood wants Nepalese to take it lightly or hug it with warmth even if it’s little bitter? Who knows?

On the other hand, Bollywood see Nepal as a fruitful territory for their movies. And with good Nepali movies budding up, Bollywood movies are hurting here. One recent example is between LOOT and AGNIPATH. Almost 50% of Agnipath shows were cut off for Nepali movie LOOT. So, could this Nepali Kolaveri be a way of bringing that Nepali audience back to Bollywood movies?

Who knows? Whatever, it is fore sure that if Nepali movies are well made, Nepalese will love and watch Nepali movies.

Nepali Short Movies Attracting Nepali Movie Haters

While Nepali movie makers are ready to announce “State of Emergency” in the industry, Nepali short movie makers seems attracting audience with their quality work.

Started not so long ago in 1961, Nepali cinema industry was a appreciated industry by our neighbours also. But now things have changed a lot. With entrance of actors like Rajesh Hamal and Dhiren Shakya in the early 90s, Nepali movie audience expected a big leap in the industry but due to lack of knowledgeable and educated people in the industry, it started going down since then. And it was never looking back continued by actresses like Rekha Thapa.

Some critics blame such degrade in Nepalese movie quality to Rajesh Hamal, who chose to play more movies neglecting quality completely. There are many to blame Rekha Thapa as a successor on such. But it seems changing..

With affordable tools and knowledge gained mostly abroad and some in Nepal too, Nepalese have started coming up with good short movies and uploading in video sharing websites like youtube and vimeo. And to no surprise people are liking it  because of their quality, content and more. There are minus points on such shorts also, and the best part than feature film makers is, short makers are accepting it and improving on their other projects.

Lastly, short movie making seems grooming lots of Nepalese talents, and that’s just awesome. When well groomed, when they enter the feature film industry, good Nepali movies are sure to be produced.

Media and journalism are taken as the most educated and appreciated field around the world and so in Nepal. That’s why it’s hard to believe without watching it.

We all living abroad do know how ridiculous those statements are, but they are used every year during EDV Lottery registration period and no Nepalese living abroad seems speaking out about such cheap statements.

or, Are we Nepalese living abroad exactly the way they are stating to the public back in Nepal? We do need to speak.

Here’s from my side:

  • There are annual figures stating about the remittance that comes to Nepal from Nepalese around the world. And that comes from hard work people cannot even imagine living back home.
  • People do not only come to clean dishes. There are hundreds and thousands of Nepali running businesses here and numerous working in top positions.
  • Nepalese abroad have reached heights making Nepal proud like Prabal Gurung and Sanyukta Shrestha.
  • The NRNs went to Nepal and produced movies when, Nepali Cinema industry was almost ready to announce, “chalchitra sankatkaal”.
  • and lot lot more…

It really feels bad and funny at the same time when media acts like this, adding their personal thoughts and of politicians and government officials who hardly know anything about it.

anyways, we do not need to prove these …. media or government officials or those politicians who have done nothing for this country, that we are Nepali

Yo Prasanga Yama Buddha Ko

Yo Prasanga Yama Buddha Ko ho. Ya, it’s one of the songs from his album which included a recent hit, Saathi.

“Saathi” was a big for him with his style of rapping and for speaking about drug issue going on among esp. teenagers of Nepal. With a well made music video costing around 1 Lakh rupees, Yama was quiet successful to reach to the audience. But that’s NOT all. He has more to say, but we, the people aren’t listening.

Today in Nepalese context, music videos play vital role reaching to the audience and listeners both. Visual medium definitely can influence much faster than audio, but is anyone trying different. Most radio stations play tracks based on popularity gain by its music videos. It’s sad that they don’t try to give their listeners tracks without videos, which might be more appealing to the people. And something alike is going on with Yama’s track.

Yama’s “Yo Prasanga” is another awesome work which speaks out about the bitter truth of rural society and treatment to their daughters. Another must listen from the album.

Hope Nepali radio stations will someday know what they are capable of and what they can provide to their listeners, which can take them to the next level.
